Mineralogica Museum Kirchler | San Giovanni Valle Aurina

How to reach the Mineralogica Museum Kirchler

The most important museum in the Eastern Alps was created out of a passion for searching for and collecting minerals that has lasted for decades.

From the area of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern, 1000 individual exhibits, which were created about 30 million years ago in the depths of our earth, are displayed on 300 m² of exhibition space. Many of these wonderful, partly unique treasures would not have been preserved without the often dangerous efforts of the collectors, but would have been destroyed by nature, such as frost and erosion.

A special attraction, apart from the largest smoky quartz crystals in South Tyrol and a replica of alpine clefts, is the most beautiful rock crystal wind in the world from the Prettau mine. The multimedia room shows the origin of minerals, the search and finding and their healing effect.

Let yourself be enchanted by the intense radiance of the manifold crystals of our mountains!

Tiso Mineral Museum | Villnöss

How to reach the Tiso Mineral Museum

In the center of the idyllic mountain village of Tiso/Teis, situated at an elevation of 960 meters between the Isarco and Funes valleys, you’ll find the expertly organized Mineral Museum. It
provides a comprehensive overview of the origins and nature of crystals, which can be found in the Dolomites and be admired in the museum today.

Paul Fischnaller, a mountain guide and mineral collector from Tiso, has recovered rock crystals from the Funes Mountains over the course of the last thirty years. The best known of these are probably the Teiser Balls. These geodes and agate nodules are embedded in their parent rock, a quartz-porphyry tuff, and can reach up to twenty centimeters in diameter. The cavity of these druses contain up to seven different minerals. Children in particular love the guided hikes, during which they can search for Teiser Balls themselves. The museum shop has extensive literature on the subject as well as souvenirs, Teiser Balls, jewelry and healing stones.

Museum of Mining | South Tyrol

How to reach the South Tyrolean Museum of Mining in Predoi, in Cadipietra, in Ridanna, and in Monteneve

History
Even in the Bronze Age, more than 4.000 years ago, it is said that copper was sought in Prettau. A so-called winged ax from that era, supposedly discovered in the mine in 1864, is evidence for this: the circumstances of its discovery have never been fully established.
The first confirmed reference to mining activity in Prettau is from the year 1426 when two guns of “Tauferer copper” were cast. The local copper was not especially suitable for making guns, however. Its exceptional ductility made it rather more suited to wire and brass production.
As elsewhere, mining started at Prettau on ore outcrops, i.e. where it reached the Earth’s surface, in this case in the vicinity of the Rötkreuz mountain at some 2.000 meters above sea level. The veins of ore, from one to ten meters wide, led down around 550 meters from there. At first, it was enough to excavate shafts to reach the veins but, from the end of the 15th century on, galleries had to be driven into the mountainside. Such excavation works sometimes took decades until the veins could be reached.
Over the centuries the “tradesmen”, as the mine operators were called, constantly changed. They were mostly from noble families, who would lease the mining rights from the sovereign princes. The last tradesman was Count von Enzenberg, who had to close the works in 1893 as copper imported from the USA could not be beaten on price. It was only a temporary closure, however, as operations resumed between 1957 and 1971 when the mine was finally closed on ecological and economic grounds, with just 35 (mostly local) miners working in the galleries.
