Messner Mountain Museum Corones | Brunico

How to reach the Messner Mountain Museum Corones

Mount Kronplatz is already a success story – and still, there is always room for yet more potential in both summer and winter. With the MMM Corones project, Kronplatz has now written another historic chapter that adds a distinct cultural flavor to this outstanding example of Alpine competence. Inaugurated in 2003, the striking Concordia 2000 peace bell was the first step towards a wider cultural offer. And now, with the MMM Corones, an exciting new milestone has followed suit. The museum was designed and built by world-renowned Zaha Hadid, by many considered the most talented and innovative architect of our time. Zaha Hadid, Reinhold Messner, and Kronplatz – that’s an impressive three key brands joining forces for this exciting new project.

Marienberg Abbey | Malles

How to reach the Marienberg Abbey

For 900 years, the Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg has lain enthroned on a mountain overlooking the village of Burgusio/Burgeis. Founded in the 12th Century by the von Trapp nobility, the monastery has been the spiritual and cultural centre of the Upper Venosta Valley. It was from here that, during the Middle Ages, agriculture was revolutionized and in its comprehensive library there are unique manuscripts and valuable tomes. It was also here that the Vinschger Paarlbrot bread was first invented and which is still baked in the Valley.

The Benedictine Abbey continues to play a vital religious and cultural role in the region. Symbolizing peace and strength, it safeguards the legacy of the past while looking to the future: a combination of work and prayer inspiring the local population and visitors alike. The Museum and the crypt with its precious frescoes are of particular significance and represent some of the most important relics of Roman art in the Alps.

Marienberg Abbey above Burgusio/Burgeis dates back to the 12th Century. The highest located Benedictine abbey in Europe is situated at an altitude of 1,340 m a.s.l., since 900 years monks live here according to the rules of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Today, the main hall displays impressions about the daily life of the monks marked by Benedict’s credo ora et labora. The exhibition displays also beautiful paintings such as the Romanesque Crypt frescoe with its unique depiction of angels.

Le Museum Al Plan | San Vigilio di Marebbe

How to reach the Museum Al Plan

Over 25 years ago Theodora and Maurizio began their search for valuable objects at flea-markets, in bric-a-brac and antique shops. The result is a unique museum in San Vigilio – Dolomites that is also listed in the Museums in South Tyrol. Even presenter Mauro Corradino of the TV series Trödeltrupp (bric-a-brac gang) has been to the Al Plan and bought a Vespa!

The museum in San Vigilio – Dolomites exhibits all kinds of clocks. And yet, time stands still in the hotel, because only 1 of the clocks is ticking. Once a year Mr Botto, a long-standing guest at the hotel, sets all the clocks. They tick, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. And then they stop still again; according to the philosophy of the hotel: on holiday, time should stand still for our guests.
With us you are never alone at the table! A family of 6 life-size wooden statues keeps you company… and when the hotel is closed, it keeps us company too. At times Maurizio puts the dolls in the car and takes them on tour. So he’s not out and about on his own…

Theodora once decorated her café in the centre of the village with the over 80 coffee grinders. Now, not only she but also her grinders have found their new home at the hotel. The collection includes true gems, such as a wall-mounted coffee grinder.

There are 46 wooden masks: laughing masks, sad masks and terrifying devil’s masks from San Vigilio, Val Gardena and Tolmezzo. Historic traditional hats, ancient mountain boots, antique skis and ice skates. There are pipes, bottle stoppers, cradle knives, china and other antique household items. They have all found their place in the Al Plan museum in San Vigilio – Dolomites.

Catarina Lanz Monument | San Vigilio di Marebbe

How to reach the Catarina Lanz Monument

Catarina Lanz, a young woman from Marebbe who was born in 1771 in San Vigilio di Marebbe, was honored in the fight against Napoleon’s French troops. In 1797, at the age of 26, she fought heroically with a pitchfork at the side of an Inntal shooter against a division of the Napoleonic army in Spinges near Mühlbach, a small village near Brixen, to save the little church and the adjacent cemetery from desecration. She became a symbolic figure of the Tyrolean fight for freedom in the French Wars.

Venosta Valley Museum | Sluderno

How to reach the Venosta Valley Museum

The Venosta Valley Museum – “Vintschger Museum” in German, “Museo della Val Venosta” in Italy – in Sluderno (Schluderns) is, as the name reveals, dedicated to the valley and its different fields. The focus is set on ecologic, social and cultural issues as much as on archeology and water management. The latter is highly important in the valley, as this western part of South Tyrol is a rather dry area. The irrigation system of the valley dates back to the Middle Ages and is one of the most dense watering network of the Alps. The so-called “Waale” are today well-known due to a large number of lovely paths leading along these irrigation canals. The permanent exhibition “WaWo – s’Wosser zum Wassern” with the theme trail Quairwaal tells about the topic.

The museum has also dedicated one section to a highly interesting, buth rather sad subject, the “Schwabenkinder”. This term is used for the kids of the Val Venosta valley who went to work to Swabia in Germany in summertime, in order to alleviate poverty at home. This is an interreg-project of the European Union, project partner is the Regional Museum Landeck at Castel Landeck in North Tyrol. Another section, called “Archaic Venosta”, however, is dedicated to archaeology in the valley. In 1997, at the Ganglegg hill above the village of Sluderno, items of the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period were discovered.

Today in this best explored hilltop site of the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period, there is a prehistoric park showing orginal structures and two reconstructed buildings. Temporary exhibitions complete the offer. By the way: there’s another museum in the valley, which is similar called. The Upper Val Venosta Valley Museum is located in Curon Venosta and tells the story of Lake Resia and the villages submerged by its waters.

Museo Passiria | S. Leonardo in Passiria

How to reach the Museo Passiria

Cattle-dealer, rebel leader, hero. The permanent exhibition cast an ironic eye over the legend of the Tyrolean popular hero Andreas Hofer. It shows how the Tyrolean rebellion of 1809 against Napoleon unfolded. It offers a glimpse into Hofer’s mind and his despair with God and the Emperor. And it shows how, despite his failure, the era following Hofer made him into a hero.

Heroes & Hofer goes beyond Andreas Hofer to show how heroes arise and how they are used – and abused.

Visitor Center Avimundus Silandro | Venosta Valley

How to reach The National Park Vistitor Center Avimundus

The Stelvio National Park is the second largest protected area in the Alpine crescent. Glaciers and rocky regions dominate the park. 40% of its area is located in South Tyrol, the entire Ortles-Cevedale group with the highest peaks in the country lies within its borders. The biggest part of it, again, is in Venosta Valley. So it is no wonder that the headquarters of the National Park Service as well as four of the five South Tyrolean National Park visitor centers (naturatrafoi in Trafoi, aquaprad in Prato/Prad, culturamartell in Martello/Martell and avimundus in Silandro/Schlanders) are located in Venosta Valley.

The National Park Visitor Center avimundus
The National Park visitor centre avimundus in Silandro is entirely devoted to the bird kingdom of the Stelvio Pass. A permanent exhibition offers visitors an overview of the world of birds in the National Park, and selected bird species are clearly presented and assigned to their respective habitats.
