Menhirs and Cupule Rocks | Laces

How to reach the Menhirs and Cupule Rocks

Altogether eleven menhirs were found in South Tyrol, and seven in Trentino, which consists of male, female and neutralmenhirs. The large stone monuments, furnished with engravings all around, once event painted, appear imposing and mystical.
During the renovations in 1992 at the Church of “Our Lady Al Colle”, carried out by the regional authority for the protection of monuments, the Laces Menhir (dating between 3300-2200 BC) was discovered. The Laces Menhir is made from pure marble and, apart from symbolizing the Adige Mountain Group; it is also linked to the Lombard Valcamonica Mountain Group. This artefact attests to the cultural links that have been interconnected in this mountain region for thousands of years in what is today the Stelvio National Park.
In the region between Coldrano/Goldrain and Castelbello/Kastelbell on Monte Sole mountain and Val Martello, numerous cupule rocks were found dating from between the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. The significance of these prehistoric cup formations on the rock surfaces is unknown. Nowadays there are various interpretations for these prehistoric formations, which are believed to have been connected with forms of religious worship or may also have served more pragmatic purposes.

Blue Gold, picturesque streets, traditions & old customs, 3 museums and … plenty of character!

In Parcines/Partschins, Rablà/Rabland and Tel/Töll, there’s no way to get bored: a bounty of cultural heritage lies waiting to be discovered!

The Parchines Cascades, (also referred to as Blue Gold) is the symbol of the village and also happens to be the highest waterfall in South Tyrol. The quaint alleys and old buildings are set in a picturesque landscape. Within the old walls lie so many hidden tales going back to the origins of the village. And then there are the local inhabitants, with some typical personalities among them. Those living in such places abide by a way of life rooted in old traditions.

Each of the three villages has its own museum with a special focus. These are interesting and unique in their particular way. One of these is dedicated to Peter Mitterhofer, inventor of the typewriter. Born and bred in Parcines, he lived and worked here throughout his life. History is revived in the collection of this special museum.

Living customs & traditions handed down from one generation to another: what better way of keeping alive a communal sense of history and identity.

Like almost everywhere else, even here the trappings of modernity have also made their inroads. Yet there are still those who are still abide by the old traditions. Working the land as they did in the olden days, these characters most certainly have some interesting stories to share!

Traditions even extend to meals and eating habits and during Lent there are those who abstain from eating meat on Fridays. The locals usually don traditional attire during festivities and formal functions such as funerals. Various cultural associations see to it that their valuable heritage and its value system are preserved.

We cherish our culture, traditions, our way of life and the little things that distinguish us as a people and a community.

Going over the rapids on imposing rolls and waterfalls – those seeking an extraordinary experience can dare a whitewater trip on the Passer river. The young team of Südtirol Rafting consists of experienced raft guides who present to locals and visitors alike an unusual view of a diverse natural river landscape. No experience is necessary to take part on this adventure ride.

Departures also include river excursions with moderate and higher degrees of difficulty:

Adventure Rafting Tour
Our Adventure Tour is aimed at anyone who is looking for an athletic challenge in South Tyrol. Dexterity, coordination and fitness are very important when rafting in South Tyrol, but the Adventure Tour also requires teamwork and cooperation. Bountiful white water and brisk waves make this experience an adrenaline rush.
The tour begins at the “Mörre” Sawmill and continues towards the village of Riffiano. This tour lasts approximately 3 ½ hours. Participants on the Adventure Tour Rafting trip will spend about 30 minutes longer on the river than those on the Adventure Light Passer route.
Duration: 3 – 3,5 hours

Adventure Tour Light
Our rafting tour on the Passer (Merano) River is suitable for both beginners and those with rafting experience. We will depart from a beautiful, open valley. Here you will find apple orchards and dense, unspoiled vegetation along the river’s banks.
The rafting tour begins after the Mörre Sawmill, right before the village of St. Martin and continues over rolling waves for 6 kilometers until we reach the wooden bridge at Saltaus.
The technically difficult portion of the tour is also an easy time for participants to get out of the boat. Guides will determine if the team will be able to take on this difficult portion of the tour. When the water level is low, following an exact path is essential. When the water level is high, the river’s speed is fast, which requires strong paddling.
Duration: ca. 2 1/2 to 3 hours

Pirate Tour (for families)
Our Family Tour is particularly suitable for families with children. We will paddle along the St. Martin in Passeier to Saltaus and together we will discover and learn more about the river’s landscape.
The rafting trip takes you through the natural, tranquil valley, during which your guide will take you through the rapids of the passirio river. Those who are young at heart and have a sense of adventure will enjoy the rivers life, including water fights and paddeling.
Duration: 2,5 hours

Chiusa

How to reach Chiusa

Attraktionen:
Sabiona/Säben Monastery | Chiusa
– City museum | Chiusa
– The Capuchin church | Chiusa
– Cantina Valle Isarco | Chiusa
– Gufidaun Village Museum | Chiusa

No less a figure than Albrecht Dürer was already in love with the town of Chiusa/Klausen in 1494, engraving his impressions in The Great Fortune. Since that time, Chiusa has brought many artists and poets under its spell: they have, in turn, depicted the city in artwork and sung about it. The picturesque little town stretches between the elongated rock atop which
Säben Castle stands and the Isarco River : beautiful facades, narrow and brightly colored, line up next to one another, surmounted by Gothic churches. Inns steeped in tradition have been here for centuries, housing illustrious guests: for a long time, the only road that led south from the Brenner Pass ran right through the middle of the little town.

Culture and history in Chiusa:
The former Capuchin monastery safeguards the fabled Loreto Treasure; like the Pinakothek (art gallery) and the modern museum gallery, it is open for public viewing. Capuchin Hill , right next to the monastery and garden, offers an extraordinary view of the city and valley. The surrounding countryside is enchanting, and has been well developed for walking. Ancient trails lead past Branzoll Castle to Säben Abbey , to Pratello/Pardell, Verdignes/Verdings, Lazfons/Latzfons, and the quaint village of Gudon/Gufidaun, and then further afield where there are old farms, lush meadows and dense forests.

Sabiona Monastery | Chiusa

How to reach Sabiona/Säben Monastery

Sabiona is the spiritual cradle of the entire Tyrol region and one of its oldest monuments. The Sabiona Mountain and its monastery deserve the utmost attention because of their archaeological, historical and artistical importance. Sabiona is the emblem of the Valle Isarco/Eisacktal, known also as the “acropolis of Tyrol”, with a very long
history.
Around the year 1000 the bishopric was moved from Sabion to Bressanone/Brixen. Until then, the Holy Cross Church was the cathedral of the bishopric Sabiona for about 400 years. The Holy Mountain is one of the oldest pilgrimage places in Tyrol. The famous Ladin pilgrimage is already mentioned in 1503.
For over 300 years now, a women’s order has taken possession of the mountain. The monastery itself is still inhabited by nuns and is therefore not accessible for visitors. However, three churches and a chapel are open to the public.

Parcines waterfall | Parcines

How to reach Parcines waterfall

Considered one of the most spectacular in the Alps, the Parcines waterfall cascades down the rock face from a height of almost 100 m. It is particularly impressive in early spring with the melting of snow, when as many as 6,000 liters of water per second flow into the Zielbach torrent.

The family hike from Parcines to the waterfall takes about an hour and a half on foot and there is also a shuttle bus. A scenic family walk leads from the Texelbahn Cable Car mountain station down to the base of the waterfall.

Castelbello

How to reach Castelbello

Attractions:
– The Kastelbell Castle

Castelbello/Kastelbell has more than 50km of beautiful hiking trails. The village is situated on the old Roman trade route Via Claudia Augusta, and stretches across both shores of the Adige River. In the center of the village is the ancient well with its “Frog Prince”. It seems that this famous fairy tale has its origins here.

A short distance away is the medieval Kastelbell Castle, built on a cliff high above the river. The now-restored castle was first mentioned in 1238. Today it functions as an event venue and cultural center. In the village center there are many old residences and farmsteads, as well as cafes, shops and also contemporary architecture which fits harmoniously into the appearance of the village. Castelbello is also famous for its cuisine and excellent agricultural products, from fruit and asparagus to juice, wine and fruit brandies. The Michelin-star restaurant Kuppelrain is only one of the places in Castelbello where guests can enjoy the local products.

The Kastelbell Castle | Castelbello

How to reach The Kastelbell Castle

The picturesque Kastelbell Castle, first mentioned in 1238, was built by the Lords of Montalban. Majestically, it is situated on a cliff on the left bank of the Adige River. Because of its exposed position, the castle had to be protected by strong fortifications, which needed to be remodernized over the years. In 1813 and 1824, the castle was largely destroyed by fire. The Counts of Hendl rebuilt only a small part for residential purposes. At the end of a protracted court process held over decades between Count Siegmund von Hendl and the Republic of Italy for the possession of the castle, eventually a settlement was reached. This allowed the State to acquire the castle.

The Kastelbell Castle is the cultural center of the village. In addition to permanent exhibitions in Spring and Autumn, alternating art exhibitions take place here.
