Pilgrimage site of Madonna di Pietralba | Nova Ponente

How to reach the pilgrimage site of Madonna di Pietralba

The cathedral in the Dolomites
An imposing, monumental sight in the charming natural landscape of the Val d’Ega: the pilgrimage site of Madonna di Pietralba. Every tree, every meadow seemed to glow with the apparition of the Virgin Mary to hermit Leonhard Weissensteiner who, after falling into a deep ravine, encountered the Mother of God in 1553. In her honour he erected a little chapel, which was subsequently ex-panded and turned into an impressive pilgrimage site and gave its name to the little hamlet close to Monte San Pietro.

A world-famous site and the Pope
On 24 August 1885, the image of the grieving Madonna was crowned once again by the then Bishop of Trento, Giovanni Giacomo della Bona, in the presence of 130 priests and 15,000 believers. The pilgrimage site reached worldwide fame when it was visited by Pope John Paul II in July 1988. The magic of the lush green landscape around the “Cathedral in the Dolomites” had already been much appreciated by Pope John Paul I during his summer retreat here.

A magnificent building from the Baroque era
The pilgrimage site of Madonna di Pietralba is seen as a sacred place from which to draw strength by the faithful and spiritually inclined, giving hope for healing and insight. Numerous votive pictures adorning the side entrance of the church testify to the gratitude of these pilgrims. The church itself holds several art treasures, such as the devotional image of the grieving Madonna, the high altar overlaid with beaten gold and silver, frescoes in the arches created by Adam Mölk and side altars by Pussjäger, as well as other artwork by A. Silber and F. Haider. The church also features the original chapel, while the Chapel of St. Peregrine Laziosi, patron saint of cancer patients, is located next to the church.

Opening hours:
The church is open throughout the year from 07:30 to 19:00.

The ruin Leuchtenburg | Kaltern

The viticultural village has got much to offer both for visitors and inhabitants. One of its main advantages is its lake, well integrated into the great landscape.

Lake Caldaro is the warmest bathing lake in the Alps as well as the largest natural bathing lake in South Tyrol, which does not necessarily mean that it has to be of vast extension, as there are not too many lakes in this area. However, lake Caldaro is well integrated into a beautiful landscape of vineyards and fruit orchards and is dominated by Castel Chiaro, which is located on a hill at the eastern lakeside and represents in a way the symbol of the area.

Lake Caldaro features a lenght of 1.8 km, is 0.9 km wide and covers an area of about 155 hectares.
Located at 216 m asl, its average depth is 3.5 m, while in some places it is even 5.6 m deep. Bathing season normally lasts begins in May and ends in September.
Due to the fact that this lake features the warmest springs in the Alps, every year it is a surprise whether the surface of the lake freezes in winter or not. If so, you can enjoy the lake from a very different point of view.
Lake Caldaro is located about 4 km from the centre of the village. The locality S. Giuseppe al Lago is directly located at the lakeside, in a slightly lonely position, which makes this place a popular holiday destination. S. Giuseppe belongs to the municipality of Caldaro.

Due to its shallow depth of the lake, already in spring the average water temperature of the lake is about 17 to 19 degrees and in high summer the lake even reaches 28 degrees. Due to the position of the lake, the temperature out of the water is about 10 degrees higher than in other mountain areas.

Windsurfers are acquainted with lake Caldaro, as it does not only offer pleasant water temperatures (already in April about 13 degrees) Also the “Ora”, a southern wind breeze blowing around midday offers great conditions for windsurfers. The “Ora” comes from lake Garda throughout the Valle dell’Adige until finally reaching lake Caldaro. A bit of Mediterranean feeling coming from lake Garda makes your holidays even more interesting.

Also another characteristic of the lake attracts lots of visitors. This area is the largest wetland area of South Tyrol and is characterised by reeds and wetland meadows, which are habitat for many waders as well as a resting place for migratory birds. The reeds at the southern lakeside give shelter to many protected animals and is thus a rest zone. Moreover the lake belongs to the “Natura 2000″ network in Europe.

A round course leading round lake Caldaro provides information on vegetation, the relationship between menkind and landscape as well as on flora and fauna on 14 information panels.

Terlano

How to reach Terlano

Attractions:
– Ruine of Castel Casanova – Maultasch
Terlano parish church

The area around Terlano benefits from a very favourable climate. It is therefore not surprising that the oldest evidence of human settlements dates back to the Neolithic period, approximately 2000 years BC. The name Terlano is first recorded in 828 AD as “Taurane” and in 923 AD as “Torilan”. Over time, the name changed to become Terlano.
In the Middle Ages Terlano was home of the Casanova Court, an area that includes today’s villages of Terlano, Andriano, Nalles and Vilpiano. The last Tyrolean local regent, Margarethe von Görz-Tirol, because of her alleged misshapen mouth (Maul) also known as Margarethe Maultasch, may have lived in Castel Casanova above Terlano (there are no historic records of this). The castle is therefore better known as the ruin of Castel Maultasch than under its actual name.
In the 16th century the mining industry flourished in Terlano. The main product mined was galenite from which silver was extracted. However, because of poor yields the mine was later closed. The silver mine brought great wealth to Terlano, which is reflected in the magnificent building of the parish church with its precious Gothic frescoes.

Moments of pleasure in Terlano
Thanks to the fertile soil and Mediterranean climate, delicious fruit grows in Terlano, Vilpiano and Settequerce. The region is known as the asparagus triangle. It is also known for its crunchy apples and best grapes.

In the villages of Vilpiano, Settequerce and Terlano asparagus has been grown for centuries. In an area of 10 ha South Tyrolean asparagus growers grow high quality Terlano asparagus. Terlano asparagus has an elegant form and a mild flavour. Served with cold ham and Bolzano sauce Terlano asparagus is a pure culinary delight and highly popular during spring – especially accompanied by a glass of asparagus wine (Sauvignon Blanc). The quality assured Terlano asparagus is marketed under the royal name “Margarete”. The name of the South Tyrolean asparagus is derived from the last regent of Tirol, who is said also to have resided in the ruin of Castel Maultasch above Terlano.

For over 2000 years grapes have been cultivated in Terlano, Vilpiano and Settequerce, and wine has been produced. The Terlano winery is one of the best in the country and regularly receives numerous awards. Immerse yourself into the world of wine, follow the wine route and take part in wine tastings and conversations with wine growers. Prickling delights await you in the sparkling wine wineries.

Apples are – not only because of Adam and Eve – one of the oldest cultured fruit known to humans. King Ramses already valued the medicinal properties of this round fruit. It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Apples contain 85% water, hardly any fat, but are full of valuable components such as vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances. Their vitamin C content is particularly important: the average of 2 mg/100 g correspond to 15% of the recommended daily requirements. The constituents of this wonderful fruit fight against free radicals and therefore slow down the ageing process, keep the skin toned, reduce susceptibility to illness in general and to diabetes and cancer in particular, and can help prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Because of this and because apples are simply part of South Tyrol and the holiday destinations Laives-Bronzolo-Vadena, everything here focuses on this round fruit.

Parish church | Terlano

How to reach the Terlano parish church

Important frescoes and the story of the “leaning tower of Terlano”

Terlano parish church is a 14th century High Gothic building. The smaller Romanesque side tower was built in the 13th century. The church houses the largest number of frescoes in rural South Tyrol. The most important frescoes were probably built by Bolzano master craftsman Hans Stockinger around 1399 – 1407. Around 1880 the frescoes were painted over; in 1950-1971 they were cleaned and partly restored.
A special characteristic is the roof of the church and of the smaller tower which is covered with colourful glazed roof tiles. The church tower is 75 m high and was built in the 16th century in Late Gothic style. Over the centuries, it began to lean more and more until it tilted by several meters and became “the leaning tower of Terlano”. For this reason, it was removed in 1884, and in 1891-1893 it was re-built in its original form using the original numbered sandstone blocks. Particularly worth seeing is the sculpture “Coronation of Mary by Christ”, which was created in Upper Italian style around 1370-1380. It is found outside above the main entrance.

A guide to the church is available for €5, either in the church or from Terlano Tourist Information.

Ruine of Castel Casanova | Terlano

How to reach Maultasch

The ruin of Castel Casanova , also called the ruin of Castel Maultasch, was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century as a dual fortress consisting of a road block on the road in the valley and the actual fortress at the top of the rocky promontory. Local regent Margarethe, Countess of Tirol and Duchess of Carinthia – also called Maultasch – is said to have stayed here frequently. The name “Maultasch” is said to have been used for Margarethe because of her misshapen mouth or her loose tongue.

The city of Bolzano is located at about 250 m asl and has got some 108,000 inhabitants, of which 26% are German-speaking, 73% Italian-speaking and about 1% is Ladin-speaking. Bolzano is the capital of South Tyrol, which officially bears the name “Autonomous Province of Bolzano“. The city is also seat of most of the departments of the autonomy administration.

The five quarters of Bolzano reflect the diversity of the small, multifaceted “city of the world“, which is of manageable dimensions, characterised by its Mediterranean ambience. As “city of a thousand dialects“, Bolzano provides an interesting insight into the way of expression of the inhabitants of the province. Bolzano, also called Bozen by the German-speaking population, is called Bulsan in Ladin language.

In the period of fascism, after WWI, many Italians from the south became established in Bolzano, while German-speaking people emigrated to the neighbouring states of Austria or Germany. Due to this Italianisation, Bolzano is today mainly inhabited by Italian-speaking citizens. The rich and animated past of the city is also reflected in architecture: the Mediaeval centre, the Jugendstil of the ending imperial-royal monarchy and neo-classicism of the Mussolini’s dictatorial regime alternate with modern façades.

Not only once you should walk the historic district of the city of Bolzano. Romantic alleys, markets and lively “Italian“ ado are going to make your walk a great experience. By the way, Bolzano is a bike-friendly city, offering an exemplary cycling network. These are some of the highlights of Bolzano you absolutely don’t have to miss.
