Museum Gherdëina | Ortisei

How to reach the Museum Gherdëina

The Gherdeina Local Heritage Museum is situated right in the center of Ortisei and exhibits valuable collections related to the cultural and natural history of the Gardena Valley: precious sculptures and paintings of local artists of the last four centuries and a unique collection of ancient wooden toys of the area, spectacular minerals and fossils of plants and marine creatures testitying to the fascinating evolution and creation of the Dolomites as extensive coral reefs over 200 million years ago, as well as remarkable archaeological finds of the oldest human traces of the area.

Two very extraordinary exhibits are the richly illuminated Lenten cloth of the Saint James’ Church above Ortisei (1620) and the very impressive original cruzifix of Seurasas (1932).

The multimedial exhibition Bierjun 1490. A Secret Passion shows the tiny bedchamber room from the Bierjun farmhouse near Ortisei with very rare drawings from the Late Middle Ages. The delicate drawings on the wooden walls are shown through a digital window.

The Museum Gherdëina also houses the Archive and permanent exhibition of Luis Trenker (1892-1990), actor and director of many mountain films.

Foto Forum | Bozen

How to reach the Foto Forum

foto-forum is a platform for photography. With exhibitions and other activities, communicative, creative and artistic positions in photography are presented and conveyed. The exhibition programme provides insights into current photography with a broad spectrum of artistic and documentary works by photographers from Tyrol and abroad. Flashbacks to highlights of the history of photography round off how the gallery provides information.

The gallery has been addressing itself to photography as a depiction of reality and documentation since 1994, serving the public as a place to meet and discuss photography, documenting and fostering South Tyrol’s current photography scene. The focus is on all photography genres: art photography, reportage photography and conceptual photography that goes beyond pure photography, with a focus on the photographic works’ form and message.
It is particularly important to us to give young up-and-coming photographers space to present their examinations of their surroundings. We see photography as part of society and of its communication – a broad field, a creative tug of war which the photographers grapple with, processing this dialogue in a wide variety of photographic stylistic idioms. The foto-forum gallery presents their subjective views, puts them up for discussion and motivates new discussions.

Plessi-Museum | Brenner

How to reach the Plessi Museum

At the Brenner Pass, in the buildings once occupied by the Customs Offices on the border between Italy and Austria, today there is the first example of a museum on a motorway. The architectural complex, covering a surface area of 13,000 square metres, was inaugurated in 2013 by Autostrada del Brennero SpA and is a formal and functional experiment for transforming a traditional rest area into a location dedicated to culture.

The museum displays videos, drawings and installations by Fabrizio Plessi, one of the leading figures of international contemporary art who, in addition to creating the works exhibited, has also designed the structure’s interior settings.

In the large main hall, conceived to be a transparent exhibition room opened onto the outer landscape, stands the large sculpture called “L’anima della natura” (The Soul of Nature) created by Plessi on the occasion of the Expo 2000 of Hannover and intended to be exhibited at the stand of ‘Euregio’ – European Region – the common cross-border collaboration project between Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino. The sculpture consists of three triangles, representing the three lands of the Euregion, and a series of screens that simulate its immersion into water. Water is indeed the dominating element of the work of art, depicted in its three states to represent the three regions: the glaciers of Tyrol, the streams of South Tyrol and the lakes of Trentino.

This cultural initiative is part of a series of projects and actions that Autobrennero is implementing in order to make motorway travelling an occasion for living significant experiences in contact with the culture of the lands the motorway crosses through.
