How to reach Malles

Once upon a time Malles was called the “Siebentürmige”, because the village had seven church towers. Today, five of these buildings have survived. The 5 still intact towers are those of the parish church Maria Himmelfahrt, the St. Benedict church from Carolingian time, the St. Martinskirche from the 12th century, the tower of the St. Johannskirche and the keep of the Fröhlichsburg.
The Church of St. Nicholas and the Church of St. James no longer exist.

The most important of these churches is St. Benedict, the oldest church. There you can admire some frescos from the Carolingian period or from the 9th century – the paintings belong to the oldest frescos in the German-speaking area. Historians suspect that the building stands on a Rhaetian source sanctuary. The Romanesque church tower was probably only added in the 12th century, while the church was probably built in the 8th century and is thus one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Alpine region. The church St.Benedikt can be visited once a week alone or with guided tours.

The parish church Maria Himmelfahrt in the centre of Mals with its typical gothic church tower catches the visitor’s eye right away. The church tower was built in 1530 and is an integral part of the village.

Always closed is the church St.Martin, which dates back to the 12th century and today stands quite hidden in the middle of residential buildings. In the 16th century this small church received a gothic choir and is nowadays only rarely used for church services.

Of the St. Johann church destroyed by the French in 1799, remains only the Romanesque tower and the facade of the church on the side of the Punibach. This tower is considered to be the most beautiful of the three Romanesque towers of Mals. The former nave was converted into a residential building some time ago and thus saved from decay.

Falzes-Pfalzen lies northwest of Brunico and is regarded as one of the five sunniest villages in the Val Pusteria. As a result of its ideal location oriented toward the south, it soaks up an especially high number of rays. Starting from Falzes and its outlying areas, it is possible to pick up the hiking routes of the Fundres-Pfunders mountains. In Issengo-Issing, a district of Falzes, is found the lovely Laghetto d’Issengo-Issinger Weiher pond with the adjacent tight rope course.

Castles Rotund and Reichenberg | Tubre in Val Monastero

How to reach Castles Rotund and Reichenberg

From the village of Tubre in Val Monastero in the Venosta Valley they are clearly visible, the ruins of the castles Reichenberg and Rotund. They have been enthroned above the valley since the year 900, attracting curious onlookers and adventurers who want to see the remaining buildings.

Around 900 the bishops of Chur gave the order to build the castles Rotund and Reichenberg, because they wanted to use them as residences. Built on steep hills, it overlooks large parts of the Val Müstair. However, after some time the castle complexes were sold and over the years the owners changed again and again until they were completely abandoned.

Rotund Castle:
High up at 1500 m is Rotund Castle, which was one of the highest castles in Tyrol due to its location. In the middle of the 12th century Rotund Castle passed to the nobles of Rotund until it was sold to Henrich von Reichenberg in 1310. In the course of their time the castle changed its owners again and again, so the barons von Schlandersberg and von Hendl appear in documents. In the 15th century the castle was renovated and repaired, until it was no longer inhabited at the end of the 17th century and left to decay. The last lord of the castle was Baron von Heydorf.

Reichenberg Castle:
Reichenberg Castle is also situated on a steep slope, but it is below Rotund Castle. Originally owned by the bishops of Chur, this castle complex fell into the hands of the lords of Reichenberg, robber knights, who spread fear and terror, in the middle of the 12th century. At the end of the 17th century, in 1680, this castle complex was also abandoned and left to its fate. Today the ruins can be visited from the outside, as large parts of the castle complex have fallen into ruins, only the keep is well preserved.

Our family business is located in Issengo near Falzes, in the midst of the South Tyrolean Alps, at an altitude of 900 m. We distill mainly needle oils from certified wild growth and cultivate over 70 different kind of herbs in a biological manner.

We pursue as a priority objective not the quantity, but the quality. By doing so, all the work from harvesting to filling is carried out manually to protect the spirit and energy of the plant as much as possible.
100 years of experience, but also the production and harvesting of the products, taking into account the “balmy time”, contribute to the first-class quality of our products.

We attach great importance to the fact that our plants come from uncontaminated cultivation areas and from our own controlled organic herbs cultivation. Everything is produced sustainably and in harmony with nature, so that the consumer gets the best possible product.
We want to guarantee to our customers “the purity and the origin of the plant as a whole”.

We offer free guided tours of our essential oil distillery, that you as our guest get a glimpse behind the scenes. Enjoy the fragrance and the colors of the various herbs with a walk through our herb garden. Come and see how nature can change its shape.

Stelvio Pass | Val Venosta

How to reach the Stelvio Pass

Located 2,757m a.s.l. between the Ortles region and Bormio in Veltlin, Stelvio Pass is the highest mountain pass in Italy. With 48 bends just on the South Tyrol side, the Stelvio pass road is an internationally recognized and popular challenge for cyclists and bikers. The so-called King stage of the Giro d’Italia is a must for cycling fans, since every true racing professional must conquer this route at least once in his or her career.

The pass is also a big draw for winter sports fans, since the area below the Geislerspitze mountain contains one of the last summer ski slopes in the whole of the Alps. Cross country ski fans will find three different ski runs on the slopes of the Ortles. The high-altitude glacier slope at the foot of the Hohen Schneide (literally “High Edge”, known in Italian as Monte Cristallo) is particularly challenging.

Surrounded by 14 three-thousanders, the expansive valley floor of the Stelvio National Park is the ideal base for a varied and exciting activity holiday at the foot of the Ortler mountain.

A huge number of paths and mountain trails enable visitors to explore the multi-faceted cultural landscape of this unique region by foot, mountain bike or road bike. Passionate walkers will find routes to suit all levels of difficulty and challenge. What’s more, it’s located within the Stelvio Natural Park, the biggest conservation area in Italy. Home to a magnificent range of flora and fauna, the park includes the 3,905-meter Ortler and the other five 3,500 m+ peaks in the Ortler group.

Winter sports enthusiasts, adventures and families will find diverse sporting opportunities and a range of options for active leisure time and winter fun beyond the busy slopes. Maintained pathways and secluded forests at the foot of the Ortler invite holidaymakers to discover the sun-drenched high-Alpine mountain landscape though cross-country skiing, winter walks, snowshoe hikes or even on a ski tour.

How to reach the Stelvio National Park

Glaciers and rocks, summits with breathtaking views, with green forests and wild brooks below – this is the Stelvio National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in the entire Alpine area, near the Ortler Cevedale mountain massif.

From the valley bottom at 650 m up to the high Alpine glacier areas, the difference in altitude is over 3,000 meters. The Stelvio National Park is home to all Alpine climate zones. The versatile ecosystem provides a suitable habitat for many rare plants and endangered animal species.

The parish church of | Falzes

How to reach the parish church of Falzes

The parish church of Falzes is dedicated to St. Cyriak. The saint was a deacon in Rome and suffered martyrdom under Emperor Diocletian.
The original Gothic building of the parish church dates back to the 15th century. In 1851 the old church was torn down to the tower, and in the following years the new church was built – this time in north-south direction.
The stairway to the church is very impressive. Two mighty horse chestnut trees line the stone staircase. The view to the facade shows a niche with a Gothic Madonna of an unknown painter.

Inside the church, wooden stairs lead to the right and left of the portal to the gallery and the choir. The ceiling paintings and the paintings on the choir arch are signed by the painter Christian Holzinger and bear the date 1853. They show the Assumption of Mary, the worship of the continents, scenes from the life of St. Cyriak and the four church fathers. The choir arch shows how Christianity defeated paganism. At the right entrance to the sanctuary there is a holy water fountain or baptismal font made of granite, marked with the stonemason’s mark and the year 1578.
The baroque high altar with its simple column structure bears the statues of St. Augustine, St. Sebastian, St. Florian and St. Cassiano. The high altarpiece, the work of Charles of Henrici, depicts the martyrdom of St. Cyriak, with its colour gradations and successful overall composition.
The cemetery chapel, built in the 17th century, is an original complex with a round choir and a transversely placed barrel vaulted nave. It was enlarged in 1994 and converted into a corpse chapel. Valuable figures from the last century were stolen in the 70s.
