The market place San Candido is situated in the Three Peaks Nature Park at the foot of Mt Baranci.
San Candido in Alta Pusteria stretches from 1,113 m asl up to 3,145 m asl and has a total of 3,100 inhabitants. Already in the 4th century BC, the Celts settled down in this area. Worth seeing is the S. Michele parish church, dating back to the 12th century, converted to Baroque style in 1735. Also worth seeing is the Museo della Colleggiata of San Candido, comprising also the archive and the library.

Fully dedicated to the Dolomites, however, is the museum Dolomythos, where you can discover the genesis of the pale mountains from close quarters. Obviously the Dolomites are also the crucial element as far as leisure in San Candido is concerned. Mountaineers can choose from a wide variety of destinations. The most striking mountain group near San Candido is, however, the Monte Baranci.

Snow is hardly ever missing in San Candido: for skiing we recommend you the Three Peaks ski carousel in the Sesto Dolomites, offering 93 km of well-groomed slopes. Moreover there are also 70 km of winter walking trails. Also cross-country skiers’ hearts leap for joy, as there is a network of 200 km of trails. In the evening? Have a drink with friends in one of the cosy mountain huts.

As far as events are concerned, the municipality has got much to offer, from balloon enlightening in the frame of the Dolomiti Balloon Festival to International Snow sculpture festival, there is something for every taste.

Mineral Springs di San Candido | San Candido

How to reach the Mineral Springs

Thermal Baths Although the use of the thermal springs that source here certainly dates back to Medieval times, the traces of the earliest thermal spa establishment only dates back to the 16th century. In 1856, the sanatorium of Dr. Johann Scheiber was built. The sanatorium was transformed into the Grand Hotel Wildbad at the start of the previous century. In 1939 the imposing building was put for auction and abandoned for a long time. Chapel of San Salvatore at the Thermal Springs in Alta Pusteria This Chapel, regularly inhabited by a religious hermit until 1786, was consecrated in 1594. A small sanctuary had already been in place before this date. The altar most probably dates back to the 8th century. The area was probably even an area of worship from a pre-Christian age. Highest point: 1333 m Accessible only by foot, approximately 45 minutes from Innichen / San Candido

After 1735, the originally Romanesque church was converted into one of the most important late Baroque sacred buildings in Tyrol. The painting is one of the main works of the painter Christoph Anton Mayr from Schwaz. The altars are the work of the cabinetmaker Josef Stauder from San Candido. The pictures of the side altars were created by Carl Jehle, the high altarpiece by Karl Blaas. The exterior, especially the magnificent west façade of the church, is a decorative jewel of the market centre.
