Reinhold Messner: My 15th 8000m high mountain is the sum of all my experiences
I have dedicated to the mountains and the mountain culture a unique project, a network of museums located in six extraordinary places in South Tyrol and Belluno. The Messner Mountain Museum is a place of encounter with the mountains, with mountain people and ultimately with ourselves. Every visit is like a mountain tour, especially recommended when the weather is good, and an MMM round trip (with the MMM Tour Ticket) is a unique experience!

With a central museum in Sigmundskron and five branch museums devoted to individual themes, Reinhold Messner has created a mountain museum that is truly unique. He describes the project as his “15th ascent over 8000 meters” – and makes use of it to communicate to visitors his knowledge and experience and the stories that derive from man’s encounter with the mountains.
MMM currently comprises six museums. MMM Firmian in Sigmundskron Castle near Bozen is the heart of the Mountain Museum; MMM Ortles in Sulden is devoted to the glaciers and the world of eternal ice; at MMM Dolomites on Monte Rite south of Cortina, the focus is on rock and mountain climbing in the Dolomites; MMM Juval in Juval Castle in Vinschgau relates the myths of the mountain. MMM Ripa in Bruneck Castle tells the story of the mountain peoples. In July 2015 the last MMM, MMM Corones, will open.
The Messner Mountain Museums are not conventional art or natural science museums; they have an interdisciplinary design. Each of the museums occupies a unique location, which helps relate the museum’s theme to the collections and the architecture. The geographical location, relics and works of art combine to form a whole.

The museum’s founder Reinhold Messner
Born in South Tyrol in 1944, Reinhold Messner has a track record of breaking with taboos – in rock climbing, on mountaineering expeditions, and crossing deserts and the Poles. For four decades he has built up a wealth of experience at the margins of the world that has enabled him to create a group of museums on the subject of the mountains. Reinhold Messner himself describes the project as his “15th ascent over 8000 meters”. His objective is to offer a study in human nature and the secrets it reveals when we find ourselves at the limits of our resources at the limits of the world. His philosophy – no artificial oxygen, no bolts, no communication – has made him a defender of those values that give mountaineering a dimension that has more to do with art than with sport. Although Reinhold Messner seeks primarily to define his basics for himself, his MMM has already become a global focus for the international mountaineering community.

Messner Mountain Museum Ortles | Sulden

How to reach the Messner Mountain Museum Ortles

The museum in Sulden am Ortler, an underground structure at 1900 m above sea-level, is devoted to the world of ice. ‘At the end of the world’ we call it. That is what it says on a 1771 map drawn by Peter Anich showing the glacier on the Ortler, beneath which the Ice Museum is located. At MMM Ortles Reinhold Messner tells of the Terrors of Ice and Darkness, Snow People and Snow Lions, the Whiteout, and the Third Pole. The museum houses the world’s biggest collection of Ortler paintings as well as ice-climbing gear from two centuries. Skiing, ice-climbing, and expeditions to the Poles are the themes. Visitors find themselves inside the mountain, where they are given a clear picture of ice mountains, the Arctic and Antarctic, the power of avalanches, and the pains taken by artists to depict the world of ice. Outside, the ice is very real, and round the corner, the Yak&Yeti offers fine fare from the snows of the Himalayas as well as the typical dishes of South Tyrol.

Lago di Costalovara | Renon

How to reach Lago di Costalovara

Not far from Oberbozen/Soprabolzano lies the pond Wolfsgrubner See/Lago di Costalovara, fairytale-like amidst gentle, timbered hills, awaiting you with fun and relaxing activities all year round. During the summer, thanks to its excellent bathing water quality, the pond invites to splashing swimming adventures, while patient fishermen pull carp, pike, tench, and eel out of its waters. A laid-back walk around the pond promises peace and tranquility; breathing that crisp mountain air – definitely a natural way to relax! During the winter, things get a bit wilder on the pond as skaters glide across the ice. Because of its shallow depth and location at 1172 meters of altitude, the pond completely freezes over every year, and so witnesses blades blazing across its frozen surface every winter. It’s really easy to reach Lago di Costalovara Pond on foot from Soprabolzano along the promenade – a pleasant walk in summer as well as winter. For drivers, there’s a big free parking lot, and if you are riding the Railway Renon departing from Klobenstein/Collalbo or Soprabolzano, it stops in Wolfsgruben/Costalovara every half hour. From the station, it’s only a 5-10-minute-walk to the pond.

Castelvecchio | Caldaro

How to reach Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio, located above the main village of Caldaro, is a small but mighty village lying on a terrace covered by orchards and vineyards. At the border of the village, there is the Gothic church of S. Vigilio adorned by colourful roofing tiles. Dating back to the 14th century in its present form, it boasts the most ancient wall painting of Caldaro, dating back to 1320, illustrating S. Cristoforo.

Particularly popular with hikers is the fabulous viewpoint close to the church. The little meadow offers seats and is ideal for making a pause, sitting back and enjoying the fantastic view on the Lake Caldaro and surroundings. Another popular excursion destination is the romantic Rio delle Foglie gorge. Above all in summertime, when it is rather hot in the valley, this ravinge offers pleasantly cool and refreshing conditions.

Ideal for a walk is also the Peace Path (Sentiero della Pace), stretching in the beautiful forests. Of course a visit to the S: Pietro ruin, which is considered the be the most ancient church of Tyrol, is a real must-do. In the surroundings of this church, cup-marked stones dating back to the Bronze Age (1,000 BC) were excavated.

Mountain of Colle | Bolzano

How to reach the mountain of Colle

About 10 km from the centre of Bolzano, there is the little mountain village of Colle, representing a real oasis of calm for all those who simply would like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. A winding mountain road takes to the mountain of Colle, moreover there is a cableway taking from Bolzano to the little mountain village. By the way the Colle funicular is one of the oldest cableways suspended in the air worldwide. Put in operation in 1908, new cabins were installed in 2007. This cableway takes you at 1.250 m asl and is a popular means for transport for those who aim at higher and cooler realms.
The little settlement, which is made up of Colle di Villa and Colle dei Signori is located in the heart of nature and is surrounded by fabulous forests and meadows. Moreover you can enjoy fantastic clear views, on the city of Bolzano as well as on parts of the Valle dell’Adige and the Oltradige.

Earth pyramids | Terento

How to reach the earth pyramids of Terento

The formation of the earth pyramids of Terento probably dates back to 1837. The stream of Terner, following a very violent storm dragged away with it 3 houses, 16 mills, 13 pile drivers, the workshop of a blacksmith and a sawmill. 13 people died. It was on that occasion that part of the mountain probably collapsed. In the following decades the erosion involved two different debris rocks: from the material covered with blocks of rock formed the classic earth pyramids, while from the material without the presence of stones formed only ridges and coasts. Starting point: central car park Terento

Calvario mountain | Appiano

How to reach the Calvario mountain

It is definitely an attraction. If you come to the centre of S. Michele, the church at the top of the green hill above the village immediately catches your eyes. If you would like to walk to this place, take the trail of the stations to the cross, taking you to the top. The green hill is called Calvario mountain, boasting several rare natural monuments.

Behind the church, the Adige glacier left some clear marks. One of this marks belongs to the most beautiful in the area of Bolzano. Moreover the moraines, that is to say remnants of the glacier, offer perfect conditions for vineyards, which today yield fruit in this region.

In certain areas, the glacier has formed the stones in such a way, that the so called “devil chairs” developed, characterised by a chair-like structure. A path leads you to these special rock formations. When the ice was melting, the snow-water flowed down, causing this special forming of the porphyry and stone sculptures like the “devil chairs” developed. Enjoy your trip to the Calvario mountain!

Cima Tessa | Val Senales

How to reach Cima Tessa

The Cima di Tessa (3,318 m asl – Texelspitze in German), which gives its name to the mountain range to which it belongs to, is only over-towered by the neighbouring Monterosso (3,337 m asl). The Cima Tessa is located in Val Senales and can be scaled starting from the Val di Fosse, strictly speaking from the Vorderkaser farm (1,676 m asl). A narrow and steep mountain road takes with gradients of about 20% takes to this farm. From the Vorderkaser farm you can also scale the Similaun Glacier.

The Cima Tessa is less popular with mountaineers than with those who love ski touring and it is a well-frequented tour in late spring (April, May). This tour takes you to the Mitterkaser and further on towards the Eishof farm on 2,000 m asl. This is where you traverse the Rio di Fosse and walk on to the foot of the Monterosso, towards the Tessa Glacier. The great views you can enjoy in this tour are just amazing.

The pre-summit can be reached with skis, if you want to scale the summit, crampons are necessary. Caution: the direct and steep descent across the rift towards the Mitterkaser is reserved for experienced ski mountaineers.
