Lake Favogna | Magrè

How to reach Lake Favogna

A lovely winding mountain road leads you quickly up from Kurtatsch, through woods, meadows, vineyards, and fruit orchards to the high plateau of Fennberg/Favogna. While Oberfennberg (Upper Favogna, 1163m) with Castel Ulmburg (19th century) and the diminutive Mariahilf chapel (Mary help – 17th century) are private property and part of the community of Kurtatsch, the somewhat lower-lying plateau of Unterfennberg (Lower Favogna, 1047m), a collection of mountain farms and summer houses, belongs to the community of Magrè/Margreid. A beautiful little St. Leonard’s church and two restaurants are the centers of the small, dispersed hamlet.

The jewel of this South Tyrolean plateau is without question little Lake Favogna, perfect for a summer swim. Although the lake is registered as a biotope with unusual flora and fauna, a small wooden platform with a ladder down to the water gives you the chance of swimming in the clear moor water while enjoying the panoramic view of the St. Leonard’s church and the surrounding mountain peaks. Water lilies, reeds, and dragonflies build a summer frame for the lake, which is a popular spot for ice-skating during the cold winter months.

The plateau offers many walking paths as well as the possibility of traveling up by hiking path or via ferrata. The plateau is also an excellent destination for bikers, be it mountain bikers, motorbikes, or racing bikers.

Museion | Bozen

How to reach the Museion

Museion, Bolzano’s museum of modern and contemporary art, lies in the heart of South Tyrol, with a view across the peaks of the Rosengarten massif. Since 2008 it has occupied its new venue, designed by the Berlin firm KSV: a striking piece of futuristic architecture inspired by the concepts of transparency and fluidity. Thanks to a bold, international exhibition programme that presents the latest and greatest in contemporary art, often for the first time in Italy, Museion has made a name for itself as one of the leading contemporary art museums in the Alpine area, and Italy as a whole.
The collection boasts more than 4500 works which are presented cyclically in themed shows, often in dialogue with other collections, both public and private. It reflects the museum’s history and past exhibitions, and covers areas including art and language, sculpture, artistic critiques of the contemporary period and the work of non-European artists.
Meeting place Museion is committed to encouraging the public to experience and engage with contemporary art, with a packed programme of mediation and events. In the summer months the media façade lights up the city with striking artist videos, while the Passage area, which also hosts external initiatives, makes Museion a key hub for cultural events including music, dance, and performance.

Winery San Michele | Appiano

How to reach the Winery San Michele/Appiano

St. Michael-Eppan winery has been creating great wines of extraordinary quality since 1907. Each vintage is cultivated in harmony with nature and the climate, in order to optimally express each individual grape variety. Work in the vineyard, the manual harvest and a modern production plant guarantee wines of the highest standard. In keeping with Alto Adige’s grand wine tradition, the St. Michael- Eppan wines all reflect their terroir through three lines: Classic Line: Made with archetypal grapes vinified in the traditional way, these wines embody freshness and genuine pleasure. The whites are aged in steel, and the reds in big barrels. Selection Line: The signature crus of the St. Michael-Eppan zone, where vines have been cultivated for centuries. Over the years the “Selection” wines have become absolute references, uniquely reflecting the strengths of small historical plots. These are exceptional wines, which are defined by their expressive bouquets and fine structure. Sanct Valentin Line: The winery’s most prized line which made its first appearance back in 1986. Produced from the best hand-selected, limited yield vines to ensure best quality fruit: these are the raw materials necessary to give astounding minerality, beautiful bouquet and a remarkably elegant structure. Born and bred through the intuition of winemaker Hans Terzer, the Sanct Valentin wines are ambassadors of South Tyrolean excellence and appreciated by wine lovers around the world.

Wilder Mann | Appiano

How to reach the Wilder Mann

The Wilder Mann Buehel is located in the protected area of the forest of Monticolo, above the little lake of Monticolo. It is one of the hiking destinations in this area that is ideal for those who do seek the most challenging trails. If you park your car in the sports area of Ronco, you can either walk or overcome the distance by bike. At the Wilder Mann you can admire ancient high altitude settlements of the Iron Age. Also the little stone pyramids, that is to say little stone constructions, are eye-catching both for adults and kids. This is also where you can enjoy a panoramic view on the Oltradige and the Monticolo forest.

The name of the remote place dates back to the period in which the first humans settled the area of Appiano. This mountain was imputed with the characteristics of a wild man (Wilder Mann), for this reason it is still called “Wilder Mann”. Other theories claim that it used to be an ancient sacrificial site. Archaeological findings dating back to the Ice Age and late Bronze Age partially testify the assumptions of the researchers. However, there are also other mystical stories telling about this place.

However, what is sure is the following: Peter Weth, citizen of Appiano, used to live in this place in the 19th century. On a journey to North America, in which was digging for gold, he lived with the Indians for a while. After his return, he was attracted by the calm of nature and started living in the forest. Still today you can see his carvings “P.W., geb. 1824″ (P.W. born in 1824).

Montiggl Lakes | Appiano

How to reach the big Montiggl Lake
How to reach the smal Montiggl Lake:

The two Montiggl Lakes sparkle like two bright sapphires amidst the dark green forests. A bird’s-eye view provides just a glimpse of the unique leisure area surrounding the two lakes. While from May to September swimming and sunbathing are the order of the day, in autumn and winter nature takes a break, allowing walkers to enjoy peace and quiet. The larger Montiggl Lake offers among other things an open-air swimming pool, South Tyrol’s longest water chute, a high-diving board, a very large sunbathing area and no shortage of places to eat and drink; just a few minutes’ walk to the northeast, meanwhile, the smaller Montiggl Lake offers a more intimate, tranquil atmosphere. Both lakes are ideal for swimming or boating across, and can easily be circuited on foot or by bike.
