Cantina Valle Isarco | Chiusa

How to reach the Cantina Valle Isarco

Because the Valle Isarco enjoys the ideal climate for growing white grapes, the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco specialized in the production of white wine. Thanks to the ideal climate, grapes of remarkably high quality, and flawless processing techniques the white wines from the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco are now among the most celebrated wines produced in South Tyrol… Our modern facility at Chiusa produces about 950.000 bottles every year. The elegance and character of the wines reflect the philosophy of the Cantina and of its 135 members: Quality without compromise!

growing areas:
The catchment area of the winery Cantina Valle Isarco ranges from the north in Neustift / Brixen via Chiusa / Sabiona into the southern Isarco Valley at altitudes between 300 and 950 metres. The geological conditions and soil characteristics are accordingly diverse.

What makes us special?
The special microclimate of this region, with hot summer days and fresh nights at vintage time, makes sure that the grapes reach maturity with a high sugar content. The light and gravelly soils, containing deal of minerals, provide these wines with strong character and incomparable typicality and elegance.

The Capuchin church | Chiusa

How to reach The Capuchin church

The Capuchin church goes also back to the donation of the Spanish queen Maria Anna (1667-1740) at the request of Father Gabriel Pontifeser (1653-1706). The church was built like the monastery between 1699 and 1701. It is, in its simplicity, a fine example of the Order’s architecture. In a niche above the main portal the marble statue of St Felix of Cantalice rises, patron saint of the church, with two angels by his side carrying the insignia of the Spanish royal family.

The altarpieces of both main and side altar were created by Lombard painter and engraver Paolo Pagani (1655-1716), who was active at numerous European courts and is referred to as the “painter of the Spanish Queen” in various documents. Both works were completed in 1702. The two side altars had originally been attributed to Carlo Cignani. Today, we know the first altarpiece was created by an unknown artist of assumingly local origin, while the second is by Lombard painter Stefano Maria Legnani (1661-1713). Legnani gives a brilliant example of the neo-classical Bolognese School and Roman influence.

City museum | Chiusa

How to reach the City museum

The art collection of the Museum of Chiusa/Klausen is located in the former Capuchin monastery. The entire first floor of the museum is dedicated to the famous Treasure of Loreto that forms the most important part of the museum. The Treasure of Loreto goes back to an endowment around 1700 by Queen Maria Anna of Spain (1667-1740) in response to a request by her confessor, Father Gabriel Pontifeser. At his request, the Queen had the Capuchin monastery built in Chiusa/Klausen and stocked with valuable gifts. Its name “Treasure of Loreto” owes the
collection to the circumstance that it was originally kept in the Loreto Chapel. The Treasure’s paraments (altar cloths), religious objects, paintings and other pieces of art mostly come from the workshops of Spanish and Italian artists of the 16th and 17th century.

Another key aspect of our permanent exhibition is the Klausner Art Colony (1874-1914). Chiusa/Klausen rose to become the city of artists in the late 70s of the 19th century due to an incisive event in literature and history. This was the time when Chiusa/Klausen flourished as a meeting point for artists. From 1874 to 1914 over 300 painters and sculptors stayed in Chiusa/Klausen.

The museum gallery offers a varied range of artwork, hosting five special exhibitions per year and the tour through the museum also includes a visit to the baroque Capuchin church .

Sabiona Monastery | Chiusa

How to reach Sabiona/Säben Monastery

Sabiona is the spiritual cradle of the entire Tyrol region and one of its oldest monuments. The Sabiona Mountain and its monastery deserve the utmost attention because of their archaeological, historical and artistical importance. Sabiona is the emblem of the Valle Isarco/Eisacktal, known also as the “acropolis of Tyrol”, with a very long
history.
Around the year 1000 the bishopric was moved from Sabion to Bressanone/Brixen. Until then, the Holy Cross Church was the cathedral of the bishopric Sabiona for about 400 years. The Holy Mountain is one of the oldest pilgrimage places in Tyrol. The famous Ladin pilgrimage is already mentioned in 1503.
For over 300 years now, a women’s order has taken possession of the mountain. The monastery itself is still inhabited by nuns and is therefore not accessible for visitors. However, three churches and a chapel are open to the public.

Parcines waterfall | Parcines

How to reach Parcines waterfall

Considered one of the most spectacular in the Alps, the Parcines waterfall cascades down the rock face from a height of almost 100 m. It is particularly impressive in early spring with the melting of snow, when as many as 6,000 liters of water per second flow into the Zielbach torrent.

The family hike from Parcines to the waterfall takes about an hour and a half on foot and there is also a shuttle bus. A scenic family walk leads from the Texelbahn Cable Car mountain station down to the base of the waterfall.

The Kastelbell Castle | Castelbello

How to reach The Kastelbell Castle

The picturesque Kastelbell Castle, first mentioned in 1238, was built by the Lords of Montalban. Majestically, it is situated on a cliff on the left bank of the Adige River. Because of its exposed position, the castle had to be protected by strong fortifications, which needed to be remodernized over the years. In 1813 and 1824, the castle was largely destroyed by fire. The Counts of Hendl rebuilt only a small part for residential purposes. At the end of a protracted court process held over decades between Count Siegmund von Hendl and the Republic of Italy for the possession of the castle, eventually a settlement was reached. This allowed the State to acquire the castle.

The Kastelbell Castle is the cultural center of the village. In addition to permanent exhibitions in Spring and Autumn, alternating art exhibitions take place here.
