Museion | Bozen

How to reach the Museion

Museion, Bolzano’s museum of modern and contemporary art, lies in the heart of South Tyrol, with a view across the peaks of the Rosengarten massif. Since 2008 it has occupied its new venue, designed by the Berlin firm KSV: a striking piece of futuristic architecture inspired by the concepts of transparency and fluidity. Thanks to a bold, international exhibition programme that presents the latest and greatest in contemporary art, often for the first time in Italy, Museion has made a name for itself as one of the leading contemporary art museums in the Alpine area, and Italy as a whole.
The collection boasts more than 4500 works which are presented cyclically in themed shows, often in dialogue with other collections, both public and private. It reflects the museum’s history and past exhibitions, and covers areas including art and language, sculpture, artistic critiques of the contemporary period and the work of non-European artists.
Meeting place Museion is committed to encouraging the public to experience and engage with contemporary art, with a packed programme of mediation and events. In the summer months the media façade lights up the city with striking artist videos, while the Passage area, which also hosts external initiatives, makes Museion a key hub for cultural events including music, dance, and performance.

Winery San Michele | Appiano

How to reach the Winery San Michele/Appiano

St. Michael-Eppan winery has been creating great wines of extraordinary quality since 1907. Each vintage is cultivated in harmony with nature and the climate, in order to optimally express each individual grape variety. Work in the vineyard, the manual harvest and a modern production plant guarantee wines of the highest standard. In keeping with Alto Adige’s grand wine tradition, the St. Michael- Eppan wines all reflect their terroir through three lines: Classic Line: Made with archetypal grapes vinified in the traditional way, these wines embody freshness and genuine pleasure. The whites are aged in steel, and the reds in big barrels. Selection Line: The signature crus of the St. Michael-Eppan zone, where vines have been cultivated for centuries. Over the years the “Selection” wines have become absolute references, uniquely reflecting the strengths of small historical plots. These are exceptional wines, which are defined by their expressive bouquets and fine structure. Sanct Valentin Line: The winery’s most prized line which made its first appearance back in 1986. Produced from the best hand-selected, limited yield vines to ensure best quality fruit: these are the raw materials necessary to give astounding minerality, beautiful bouquet and a remarkably elegant structure. Wilder Mann | Appiano

How to reach the Wilder Mann

The Wilder Mann Buehel is located in the protected area of the forest of Monticolo, above the little lake of Monticolo. It is one of the hiking destinations in this area that is ideal for those who do seek the most challenging trails. If you park your car in the sports area of Ronco, you can either walk or overcome the distance by bike. At the Wilder Mann you can admire ancient high altitude settlements of the Iron Age. Also the little stone pyramids, that is to say little stone constructions, are eye-catching both for adults and kids. This is also where you can enjoy a panoramic view on the Oltradige and the Monticolo forest.

The name of the remote place dates back to the period in which the first humans settled the area of Appiano. This mountain was imputed with the characteristics of a wild man (Wilder Mann), for this reason it is still called “Wilder Mann”. Other theories claim that it used to be an ancient sacrificial site. Archaeological findings dating back to the Ice Age and late Bronze Age partially testify the assumptions of the researchers. However, there are also other mystical stories telling about this place.

However, what is sure is the following: Peter Weth, citizen of Appiano, used to live in this place in the 19th century. On a journey to North America, in which was digging for gold, he lived with the Indians for a while. After his return, he was attracted by the calm of nature and started living in the forest. Still today you can see his carvings “P.W., geb. 1824″ (P.W. born in 1824).

Montiggl Lakes | Appiano

How to reach the big Montiggl Lake
How to reach the smal Montiggl Lake:

The two Montiggl Lakes sparkle like two bright sapphires amidst the dark green forests. A bird’s-eye view provides just a glimpse of the unique leisure area surrounding the two lakes. While from May to September swimming and sunbathing are the order of the day, in autumn and winter nature takes a break, allowing walkers to enjoy peace and quiet. The larger Montiggl Lake offers among other things an open-air swimming pool, South Tyrol’s longest water chute, a high-diving board, a very large sunbathing area and no shortage of places to eat and drink; just a few minutes’ walk to the northeast, meanwhile, the smaller Montiggl Lake offers a more intimate, tranquil atmosphere. Both lakes are ideal for swimming or boating across, and can easily be circuited on foot or by bike.

Kasatsch Ruins | Nalles

How to reach Kasatsch Ruins

On the mountain ledge of the Tisen Vorbichl mountain, near Nals, just above the Tisen hamlet of Schernag, in 1194, five men from Tisens – after having been given permission by the bishop Konrad II von Beseno – built a castle. The area was called Kasatsch (from the Latin “casaccia” = big house) and there are also some findings from a pre-historic settlement. The permission included a deal, that this castle had to be open at all times for the Bishop of Trento and his ministerial officers, the Counts of Eppan. No family name was carried forward with the existence of the castle. It was also feoffed to several service personal of the Eppan counts. During the centuries that followed, the castle changed ownership several times. Before the year 1600, Castle Kasatsch was also called Pfeffersburg as the former owners were the Lords of Pfeffersberg. Today, there is very little left of the former fortress, although it is still possible to see the oval ring wall and the remains of a two-part annex. Around 1600, the residence was left empty and began to fall into disrepair. Due to the fact that it did not have extended buildings, the castle was kept in its original form and the renovation work carried out between 1999 and 2002 by its present owner, Mrs Verena Jordan, ensured it would stay that way. The excellent preservation of the ruins of Castle Kasatsch (municipality from Tesimo) ensures that every visitor can enjoy a unique experience, while travelling back in time to the Middle Ages and its knights.

Lake Caldaro | Caldaro

How to reach the Lake Caldaro

Swimming:
– Swimming & beaches | Kaltern

Attraction nearby:
The ruin Leuchtenburg | Kaltern

The viticultural village has got much to offer both for visitors and inhabitants. One of its main advantages is its lake, well integrated into the great landscape.

Lake Caldaro is the warmest bathing lake in the Alps as well as the largest natural bathing lake in South Tyrol, which does not necessarily mean that it has to be of vast extension, as there are not too many lakes in this area. However, lake Caldaro is well integrated into a beautiful landscape of vineyards and fruit orchards and is dominated by Castel Chiaro, which is located on a hill at the eastern lakeside and represents in a way the symbol of the area.

Lake Caldaro features a lenght of 1.8 km, is 0.9 km wide and covers an area of about 155 hectares.
Located at 216 m asl, its average depth is 3.5 m, while in some places it is even 5.6 m deep. Bathing season normally lasts begins in May and ends in September.
Due to the fact that this lake features the warmest springs in the Alps, every year it is a surprise whether the surface of the lake freezes in winter or not. If so, you can enjoy the lake from a very different point of view.
Lake Caldaro is located about 4 km from the centre of the village. The locality S. Giuseppe al Lago is directly located at the lakeside, in a slightly lonely position, which makes this place a popular holiday destination. S. Giuseppe belongs to the municipality of Caldaro.

Due to its shallow depth of the lake, already in spring the average water temperature of the lake is about 17 to 19 degrees and in high summer the lake even reaches 28 degrees. Due to the position of the lake, the temperature out of the water is about 10 degrees higher than in other mountain areas.

Windsurfers are acquainted with lake Caldaro, as it does not only offer pleasant water temperatures (already in April about 13 degrees) Also the “Ora”, a southern wind breeze blowing around midday offers great conditions for windsurfers. The “Ora” comes from lake Garda throughout the Valle dell’Adige until finally reaching lake Caldaro. A bit of Mediterranean feeling coming from lake Garda makes your holidays even more interesting.

Also another characteristic of the lake attracts lots of visitors. This area is the largest wetland area of South Tyrol and is characterised by reeds and wetland meadows, which are habitat for many waders as well as a resting place for migratory birds. The reeds at the southern lakeside give shelter to many protected animals and is thus a rest zone. Moreover the lake belongs to the “Natura 2000″ network in Europe.

A round course leading round lake Caldaro provides information on vegetation, the relationship between menkind and landscape as well as on flora and fauna on 14 information panels.
